RELATIONS WITH THE
STATE OF QATAR
Relations of Kazakhstan and the State of Qatar were established on July 1, 2003 and steadily develop in various fields.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan Askar Mussinov to the State of Qatar with residence in Riyadh presented the Letters of Credence to His Highness Deputy Amir, Crown Prince of Qatar Tamim bin Khamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani on October 2, 2005.
In May, 1998 the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N.Nazarbayev visited Qatar in the framework of his tour to Arab Countries of the Gulf. Bilateral Agreements on Trade and Economic Cooperation, on Establishment of Joint Intergovernmental Commission and on Cooperation between Chambers of Commerce and Industry were signed.
In April, 1999 Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad ben Khalifa Al Thani visited Kazakhstan. This visit in the framework of which Sheikh Hamad met with the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan was the first visit of Leader of Arab state to Kazakhstan.
The questions of development of bilateral political and economic relations of two countries were discussed during the mentioned visit. Sheikh Hamad in the conclusion of his historical visit to Kazakhstan decided to finance the construction of mosque as a contribution of Qatar to the development of new capital of Kazakhstan – Astana. Leaders of two states came to a conclusion to name the Mosque after Sultan Beibars, prominent person in the history of Islam, one of the greatest Sultans of Mamlyuk, founder of Kypchak dynasty in Egypt and Syria, who was born in Western Kazakhstan.
On the assumption of necessity of further development of mutually beneficial cooperation of Kazakhstan and Qatar and also on instructions of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N.Nazarbayev and Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad ben Khalifa Al Thani the First and the Second Sessions of Intergovernmental Commission were held in Doha in 2000 and in Astana in 2001.
In the framework of mentioned Commission activities the most important priorities of cooperation between Kazakhstan and Qatar were elaborated, also the specific measures were undertook in the spheres of oil and gas, trade education, tourism and sport.
During 2005 the construction of Islamic Cultural Center named “NurAstana” in Astana on financial assistance of the State of Qatar was completed. On March 22, 2005 “NurAstana” was inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N.Nazarbayev and eth Special Envoy of Amir of Qatar.
Similarity of positions of two countries on basic international questions promotes active cooperation within the framework of such organizations as UN, OIC and etc. Kazakhstan participated in 9th OIC Summit in Doha in 2000, 3rd Conference on Democracy and Free Trade in Doha.
Ambassador of Kazakhstan Askar Mussinov took part in Second South Summit of Group of && and China, which was held in Doha on June 14-16, 2005.
On October14-16, 2005 the Deputy General Prosecutor of the Republic of Kazakhstan M.Vaissov and Ambassador of Kazakhstan Askar Mussinov took part in the Second World Summit of General Attorneys, General Prosecutors and Chief Prosecutors held in Doha.
In December, 2005 Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Riyadh conveyed the invitation addressed to the Leader of Qatar to participate in Presidential Inauguration. In this regard, the Ambassador of Qatar to Kazakhstan with residence in Ankara Abdel Razaq Al-Abdel Gani participated in the Inauguration of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N.Nazarbayev in Astana on January 11, 2006.
